The most basic necessities of life will be controlled by some who can, as leverage. That means Canada at some point in the future will have to defend itself.
Canada needs to become a superpower, with 100M+ people, and a serious ability to defend itself with brutal precision against any who would attack us. I wish it wasn't so, but I'm a realistic idealist, and see the trajectory of world events shaping up for some tough times.

I was very pleased to see this announcement. So many argue there is no business case for this, while conveniently forgetting that Canada's sovereignty IS the business case. We also NEED the income right now. Not to mention our allies are literally begging us daily for alternative energy resources. We offer one of, if not the cleanest source of oil and gas. The world has been turned upside down, and then pulled off its axis left spinning with the fascist Trump regime.
No one can predict how long oil and gas will be heavily used. Longer than we thought, despite renewables being pushed by many nations as a result from the Iran war debacle.
And we want India, and others off dirty coal. That will be the alternative for some nations who cannot get access if they are importers, and cannot fast track en masse renewables across their country.
I have been an environmentalist all my life. I turn 60 in less than two weeks. At aged 18, long before anyone was crying about the environment I made a life decision not to put a car on the road. This was also long before EVs were a dream. Anyone who has taken public transit 30 years ago in Edmonton in January with -40C weather at 5:00am to get to work because transit was awful back then, knows this is a sacrifice. I was able to do that, and not all people can do that for many reasons. I say that not because I'm patting myself on the back. Rather, I'm saying we need a pipeline, maybe even 2, AS a fervent environmentalist.
I wish the world was different. I wish we were further along as a species to protect this beautiful planet, and I wish there weren't assholes, like the fascists and authoritarians to make our lives difficult. But there are, and we must secure this country otherwise if wishes were horses, environmental dreams will turn to dust as will this beautiful mosaic of a country that we call home, and many in the world look to for a light in the window in these dark times.
Nice summary. I knew this article was coming - the timing of the energy announcements yesterday was no coincidence, coming on the heels of the totally expected move by Trump to not fully renew CUSMA, but to renew annually. Chaos is the only predictable output from the Trump administration.
Yes indeed! This distinction is critical. Delivering projects on schedule & budget requires detailed planning and adequate time and expert input. Too many public projects exceed time & budget because of 'hurry, hurry' politics. Then again, the Massey Tunnel project started as a bridge and the change in government killed that project at great cost as it was already underway and the proponents needed to be paid by contract. Politics is frequently the catalyst for infrastructure budget over runs.
